About four years ago, a solo climber on the south side of Quandary Peak near Breckenridge got disoriented and stuck. She called 911 and the on-call mission coordinator for the Summit County Rescue Group made contact with her by cell phone. She repeatedly refused assistance and said she just wanted to be talked out of the area. This particular area of Quandary is quite dangerous, and it was after dark when she called. After going back and forth with her for some time, the coordinator finally asked why she didn't want help and her answer was, "I can't afford it." Once he explained to her that there would be no charge she instantly changed her tune, and the team deployed and assisted her out.
This is one of many examples across the state of Colorado of the misperceptions regarding charges for backcountry rescue. If you are rescued by one of the search and rescue teams in Colorado that is entirely staffed by volunteers - and that's all but one team across the entire stat

SUMMIT COUNTY - Both live electronic and in-person forums for local town council candidates are scheduled this month as the April 6 elections approach.
The in-person forums are to occur at town halls March 17 in Frisco, March 18 in Breckenridge and Silverthorne and March 23 in Dillon.
The Summit Daily is hosting electronic forums through its website March 24 for Dillon, March 25 for Breckenridge, March 31 for Frisco and April 1 for Silverthorne.
Users will be able to submit questions in the chat-room-style forum. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

SUMMIT COUNTY - Candidates were announced Friday afternoon in four town council and mayoral elections across the county, with three races unopposed.
In Breckenridge, seven candidates will run for three council seats. The list of candidates as they will appear on the ballot: Dave Rossi, Mike Dudick, Rodney Allen, Larry Crispell, Mark Burke, Ben Brewer and Jennifer McAtamney.
Rossi and McAtamney are incumbents; Allen is a member of the town's planning commission.
In Silverthorne, five candidates will vie for three open positions. Darrick Wade, Stuart Richardson, David Preaus, Russ Camp and Dave Anderson are all in the running. Mayor Dave Koop will run for re-election unopposed.
In Frisco, there may not be an election. Three candidates - Kimberly Cancelosi and incumbents Woody Van Gundy and Kent Willis - have filed petitions to run for three open seats.
